Edinburgh – Stop #4

Edinburgh. Home to Edinburgh Castle, the city where J.K. Rowling wrote some of the first novel of the Harry Potter series, and stop #4 on our overseas adventure.

Edinburgh Stop 4

I’m sad to say that Edinburgh would not have made our list if not for St. Andrews being an hour’s drive from here. However, after doing lots of reading up on this city, I am beyond thrilled that we are going to be spending 4 nights here.

We will be arriving in Edinburgh on the 15th and traveling by train to St. Andrews for an overnight stay, then back to Edinburgh the evening of the 16th to begin exploring the city!

Fun Fact: J.K. Rowling wrote some of the 1st novel of the Harry Potter series at the Elephant House in Edinburgh.

Thus far, Edinburgh is our most lax itinerary with only having booked tickets to tour Edinburgh Castle. There is so much history behind the castle, and Brady, being a history buff, jumped all over this opportunity! The castle was formerly a prison in the 18th century and early 19th century. It held prisoners from the Seven Years’ War, the American War of Independence, and the Napoleonic Wars. The castle was also used as an arsenal in the 15th Century.

Fun Fact: Edinburgh Castle sits upon Castle Rock, part of an extinct volcano.

Several other tourist hot spots have made their way onto our list including climbing Authur’s Seat and Calton Hill, visiting the National Museum of Scotland, St. Giles’ Cathedral, Scott Monument,  Holyrood Palace, and explore The Royal Mile and Princes Street. With three full days of exploring, I’m sure we will be able to knock most everything off our list and then some!

Fun Fact: I am a direct descendent of Mary, Queen of Scots!

I personally would like to take a daytrip to the Scottish Highlands, particularly Loch Ness, but unfortunately we just don’t have the time to spare with having added the overnight trip to St. Andrews. I suppose spotting Nessie will just have to wait for another trip. Perhaps we will spend a couple weeks on the Isle of Skye too! A girl can dream. I cannot wait to see what this beautiful city has in store for us.

Over to you!
